The 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe is Coming Sometime During the Summer of 2018!

The word is out: a new fourth-generation Hyundai crossover SUV is coming for the 2019 model year. The new Hyundai Santa Fe will be more than a name change, to Santa Fe XL, and though its sibling, Santa Fe Sport, will drop the "Sport" convention and ascend to its sibling's name, Santa Fe, big changes are on the horizon. So, what else do we know so far?

For one, teaser renderings suggest design nods to the new Hyundai Nexo hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle as well as, with a divided cluster of twin headlights, the upcoming Hyundai Kona, an SUV in the small class. Secondly, we do know the new SUV's dimensions -- 187.8 inches long and 74.4 inches wide, slotting between the third-gen, three-row Santa Fe out now, measuring 193.1 inches long, and the two-row Santa Fe Sport at 185 inches.

Shots released by our automaker of a full dashboard suggest higher trims will be loaded with tech. We spied a sizable floating screen with navigation capabilities accompanied by tactile controls, an in-cluster display, and heated and cooled seating. Plus, the rumor is that the new Santa Fe will have more passenger and cargo capacity, a host of Hyundai Smart Sense technologies standard in its SE and higher, and a choice of three powertrains. We might see a 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder, a turbocharged, 232-horsepower 2.0-liter variant, and – the piece de resistance – what may be a 2.2-liter CRDi turbodiesel offering approximately 200 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of turning and pulling power.

Either way, we think we can count on pairing with a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, and a self-load-leveling suspension is set to appear as an option for agility, responsiveness, and maybe even some towing chops. Of course, that's not to mention the possibility of some semi-autonomous driver-assist tech borrowed from its Genesis luxury cousin. But perhaps what grabbed our attention best: the potential of a Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist feature, combining rear cross-traffic alert and automatic braking, and a Hyundai-first Safe Exit Assist feature, designed to help protect you and your passengers from opening Santa Fe doors into oncoming traffic.

We expect the global debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show, with one in North America, at the New York Auto Show, following closely. Plus, new information may come down the pipe before then, so stay tuned.
